Privacy Policy
In force since 5 August 2026. The French version is the reference text; this one follows it clause for clause.
SYEL is a reflective journal. You write; she gives you back a page. What you tell her is, by nature, the most private thing you have — this document says exactly what is done with it, by whom, where, and for how long.
What SYEL is not
SYEL is not therapy, not a diagnosis, not a health service. She never names a disorder and never applies a clinical label. She is not an emergency service: she can offer you a number, she never dials and never contacts anyone on your behalf.
Who is responsible for your information
SYEL AI, 1625 De Maisonneuve Blvd. West, Montréal, Québec H3H 2N4, Canada.
Person responsible for the protection of personal information (Québec Law 25): Ted Nsangou, founder and chief executive officer.

If you live in the European Union, write to the same address: it is read by the person named above.
What we collect
What you write. Your messages, stored encrypted. Every account has its own encryption key, itself sealed by a master key that does not live in the database. A leaked copy of the database would be unreadable text.
What SYEL writes. Your mirrors (the daily, weekly and longer pages) and the patterns she proposes. They are her readings, not yours: you recognise them or you set them aside — you do not rewrite them.
Your account. An email address only if you choose to link one — a SYEL account opens and works without it. A first name, only if you give it. Your language, your region and your time zone, the last one synced from your device so a notification lands in your morning rather than a server's.
The technical minimum. A notification token if you turn them on; a subscription identifier if you pay; and a spend ledger recording, for each model call, the model used, the number of tokens and the cost — never the content.
IP addresses. Our authentication provider processes them to limit abuse at account creation and when sign-in links are sent.
What we do not collect
No analytics. No trackers. No audience measurement, no crash reporting, no advertising, no ad profiling, no precise location. The app ships no library of that kind — it is verifiable in the code, and it is a choice, not an oversight.
We do not sell any information, to anyone, ever.
Why, and on what basis
What you write in a journal touches your inner life: it is sensitive information under Québec's Law 25 and a special category of data under article 9 of the GDPR. We process it on the basis of your explicit consent, given when the account is opened, separate from anything else, and withdrawable.
- Answering you and writing your pages — the service itself.
- Keeping your account and letting you return to it from another device.
- Sending the notifications you asked for, and only those.
- Billing paid Paths, if you choose one.
- Protecting the service from automated abuse — legitimate interest.
Your consent, and how to withdraw it
You may withdraw it at any time. In practice that means deleting your account: SYEL cannot work without reading what you write, and we would rather say so plainly than offer you a button that changes nothing. Deletion is immediate and yours to perform, under Settings → Account.
How long we keep things
Your conversations stay readable as long as you keep them. That is a product decision: a journal whose history erases itself is not a journal. Nothing is deleted automatically by the passing of time.
You keep three acts, all immediate:
- Delete your conversations — your mirrors and patterns remain.
- Delete your account — everything goes, including the key that decrypted
your messages, which makes the rest permanently unreadable.
- Export your data — a complete file, yours.
The spend ledger keeps its rows after an account is deleted, with no identifier: we know what the service cost, no longer whom it cost it for.
Who else touches it
We entrust data to these processors, and to no others:
| Processor | What it handles | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, authentication | Canada |
| Anthropic | The models that write the replies and pages | United States |
| Google Cloud | API hosting | Canada (Montréal) |
| Resend | Sending sign-in links | United States |
| RevenueCat | Subscriptions | United States |
| Expo | Delivering notifications | United States |
Nothing you write trains a model. Not ours — we train none — and not Anthropic's, whose API terms exclude it.
Transfers outside Québec and the European Union
Your messages are sent to Anthropic, in the United States, for as long as it takes the model to read them and answer. Three things protect them there: they train no model, they are not kept to serve any other purpose, and everything at rest with us is encrypted. The database and the hosting stay in Canada.
How it is protected
Per-user envelope encryption: a data key of its own for each account, sealed by a master key held outside the database. Row-level isolation in the database, so a query that forgot its condition still cannot reach someone else's account. No password exists anywhere — you come in through a link sent to your address.
Your rights
Access, portability, rectification, erasure, withdrawal of consent, objection, restriction. The first three are already buttons in the app; for the rest, write to support@syel.ai and we answer within 30 days.
You may complain to the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec, or to the data protection authority of your country if you live in the European Union.
Minimum age
SYEL is for people 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from minors; if we discover such an account, it is deleted.
In a crisis
The crisis screen works with no model call at all, with verified numbers, and it is identical on every Path — free included. It is never counted, never limited, never withheld. Nothing dials and nothing contacts anyone on your behalf: SYEL offers a number, you decide.
Changes
If this document changes in a significant way, we tell you in the app and ask for your consent again rather than treating your silence as agreement.
